Fears over next generation remaining alien to mother tongue expressed
TIRUPATI: The fifth day of the literary meet తెలుగు భాషా బ్రహ్మోత్సవాలు (Telugu Bhasha Brahmotsavalu) on Monday witnessed linguists asking parents to make their children love their mother tongue, culture and traditions.
Yarlagadda Lakshmiprasad, former parliamentarian and presently a member of Hindi implementation panel, expressed concern that adoration and love for the mother tongue was almost on the brink of collapse among Telugus.
He said that it should be inculcated right from childhood and not injected through such seminars and conferences by literary bodies and voluntary organisations.
Taking the cue, personality development guru Yandamoori Veerendranath said that parents were solely responsible for the emergence or otherwise of children as full-fledged personalities and appealed to them to respond to their immediate needs.
Government blamedBlaming the government for leaving Telugu high and dry at the school education level in his lecture on ‘Why mother tongue’, Singamaneni Narayana feared that the next generation would remain alien to their own language if the trend continued for two more decades.
He strongly advocated the need to encourage teaching in vernacular languages.
In the session presided over by director of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam’s Annamacharya Project Medasani Mohan, Vakulabharanam Ramakrishna spoke on the ‘Historical legacy of Telugus’, K. Rammohan Roy on ‘Arudra’s worldly outlook’, J. Krishnaprasad on ‘Glory of Vijayanagara empire’ and Meegada Ramalingaswamy on the greatness of ‘Tirupati Venkatakavulu’.
FelicitatedActress of yesteryear Anjali Devi, litterateurs -- C.V. Subbanna Sathavadhani and S.T.Gnanananda Kavi -- were felicitated on the occasion.
‘Ashtavadhanam’ by Garikapati Narasimha Rao and ‘Perini Sivathandavam’ by the disciples of Nataraja Ramakrishna evoked thunderous applause from the audience.

TIRUPATI: For the first-ever Telugu Bhasha Brahmotsavams being held here, the main roads turned virtual auditoriums thanks to the marvels of modern technology.
The Brahmotsavams is the reincarnation of yesteryears’ Telugu Bhasha Samskruthi Varotsavalu. With people pouring into the venue - Mahati Auditorium, which has a capacity of 2,000, organisers came up with a strategy to adopt modern technology to address the crisis.
They set up a giant LED screen outside the auditorium in addition to two screens. People who could not find a seat or a place to stand inside, can watch the proceedings on the screens outside the auditorium.
One more LED giant screen was set up at the entrance to Gandhi Street near Nalgugukalla Mandapam, close to Sri Govindraja Swamy temple and railway station. Loudspeakers were fixed to electric poles.
Besides, posters and hoardings of noted poets, poetesses, and eminent personalties of Telugu language, literature and history were erected at strategic places and colourful banners were seen anywhere, giving the town a festive look.

Telugu antiquity dates back to 2000 years
“Largest spoken language next to Hindi”
HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Saturday dashed off yet another letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh renewing the State’s plea for according “classical language” status to Telugu. He said “nothing short of this will do justice to the sentiments of Andhra Pradesh people”. Any laxity in this respect might be construed as ignoring the sentiments. He requested Dr. Singh to consider the far-reaching implications of this burning issue and expedite the process.
Referring to the eligibility criteria, specified by the Home Ministry to get the classical status such as “a high antiquity of early texts/recorded history of over 1,000 years”, the Chief Minister said records suggested that Telugu antiquity dated back to more than 2,000 years.
He said “agonising delay” in according status to Telugu is causing heartburn to over 10 crore Telugu-speaking people in the world today. “Telugu is the largest spoken language in the country, next only to Hindi,” he added. He told the Prime Minister that the numismatic, scriptural and epigraphical evidences dating back to the second and third century BC and from 4th to 6th century AD clearly established Telugu as one of the oldest Dravidian languages. He said literary giants praised Telugu for its beauty and mellifluousness. Indira Gandhi specified Telugu as “one of the oldest languages spoken by large number of people. Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. G. Ramachandran observed that Telugu grew along with Tamil.
Tamil poet Subramanya Bharatiyar admired it as “Sundara Telugu”. And celebrated French linguist Daniel Negers observed that French and Telugu had a lot of commonalities, but while French grew into an international language, Telugu remained confined to a small corner.

ENTERTAINMENT: Walt Disney to introduce a two-hour Telugu band on its flagship Disney channel. |
Disney characters will now speak Telugu. Walt Disney Television International, that operates three children’s channels in India, is introducing a two-hour Telugu band on its flagship Disney Channel. The channel is currently available in English and Hindi languages. |
Walt Disney’s senior vice-president and managing director, Antoine Villeneuve, said that Disney’s decision to launch the channel in Telugu was based on the success of Jetix in the south. |
Jetix, the kids’ channel targeted at boys in the age group of 6 to 11, is the number one children’s channel in the region and is available in both Tamil and Telugu. |
To drive up Disney’s viewership, Villeneuve is focusing on content. For a start, December will see the channel premiere High School Musical 2 on Disney. The film is a sequel to High School Musical which turned out to be a super hit children’s film in the US last year. |
High School Musical 2 was premiered in America in August and has been viewed by 60 million people. To promote the film in India, Disney has released its music album and will now air a promotional music video shot in India. |
The channel has already sourced a children’s serial in Hindi. Called Shararat, the serial was first aired on Star Plus. “The biggest challenge is to make Disney Channel move up in terms of accessibility, reach and connection,” said Villeneuve. |
He said that while Jetix was leading in the south, Hungama, acquired from UTV last year, was the leader in the Hindi speaking markets. The effort will now be to make Disney more exciting by revamping its packaging as well. “Hungama gives that additional surface to our Indian operations,” said Villeneuve. |
Though he refused to divulge figures, Villeneuve said that advertising on children’s channels was growing at 35 per cent a year. The top Jetix executive in France, Villeneuve was appointed MD of Walt Disney in India in June this year. |
