Gangadevi (14th Century) was the daughter of Kakatiyas and the daughter-in-law of the Vijayanagara Dynasti founded by Bukkarayalu and Harihara Rayalu. She was the wife of Kamaparayalu, the third son of Bukkarayalu. The rulers of both Kaktiya and Vijayanagar dynasties are indigenous Telugu communities. She wrote the true story of her husband's victory over Muslims in Madhura, entitled "Madhura Vijayamu." This Kavyamu (poem) is also known as "Veerakamparaya Charitramu," and contains 8 chapters.

Zee Telugu to relaunch on 18 May

By SONALI KRISHNA
Indiantelevision.com Team

(25 April 2005 5:00 pm)

MUMBAI: Zee Telefilms is working on a new recipe to take grip of the Telugu language market which has been traditionally under the dominance of Gemini TV and ETV Telugu.

Come 18 May Zee Telugu will adorn a a new avatar and focus on audiences that has not specifically been addressed by the other channels. The relaunch will see a shift in positioning - From the mass based general entertainment mode to an upwardly mobile and young milieu.

The new strategy will see Zee Telugu targeting the SEC ABC (15 - 34) group. Apparently, the Telugu space till date has no definite positioning from any channel, as they either offer mass based general entertainment or news based programmes. Now, Zee Telugu, with its redefinition of its TG, will try and capture a space where class programming will be offered.

"It will be a battle of "class Vs mass programming," points out a Zee official.

The vision is to have a definite positioning that can stand apart from what is currently being offered. To add momentum to its Telugu plans, Zee had appointed former ETV hand Ajay Kumar as senior vice-president and business head in February this year.

Post Zee Telugu's launch, the channel hopes to spruce up its channel share to about 8-10 per cent, four to six months hence. On the pogramming front, the channel is currently working with reputed content providers and hoping to gain a lot more channel share after the facelift.

If one looks at the current standing of the Telugu channel, it garners less that one per cent of channel share in the market. The leaders of the Telugu space are Gemini TV and ETV.

Zee's other regional channels will also be a key area of focus in the days to come considering 40 per cent of viewership comes from down South.

Telugu thrives in Mauritius

Bhimavaram, April 19: The Mauritius government was very keen to conduct research on Indian languages such as Telugu, Tamil and Hindi, said radio personality and researcher Mr Sanjeeva Narasimha Appadu.
Speaking to mediapersons here on Tuesday, Mr Appadu, who is in the State to conduct research on Rangoli (popularly known as muggulu), said that the Mauritius government had declared an official holiday on the Andhra Pradesh State Formation Day to honour Telugus in the country.

It had also given holidays for other Hindu festivals such as Ugadi, Diwali, Dasara, Sankranti and Vinakayakachathurthi. Several Indian languages including Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Hindi, and Urdu were taught in the government schools of the island country, apart from Chinese, he said. "There are about 89 evening schools teaching Telugu language," said Mr Appadu. There was a Telugu television channel telecasting programmes in the language, he said.

The Mauritius government was also keen on developing institutions to conduct research and training on Kuchipudi, Bharatanatyam and
Carnatic Music, he added. Mr Appadu said that about 10,000 Telugus had migrated to the Mauritius during the British era to cultivate forest lands. There were at least 60,000 Telugus in the country at present, he added.

Breaking the language barrier, ETT-style

Saturday April 16 2005 09:22 IST

VISAKHAPATNAM: Computers are constantly conquering new frontiers and now are all set to break the ‘language barrier’ with the advanced software being developed.

That’s what M Prasanth Kiran, a B.Tech final year student of the Avanti Institute of Engineering and Technology, Narsipatnam, has achieved, morphing computers into user-friendly tools for those poor in English.

When assigned to select a project of his choice, Kiran hit upon the novel idea of translating English text to Telugu. He soon succeeded in developing his dream software, the ‘English Telugu Translator’ (ETT) -- a package not yet fully developed anywhere else.

ETT uses Java and other Microsoft programming tools to translate English sentences into Telugu by following Telegu grammar rules. The output can be seen in the Telugu script and heard in speech form with the help of sound-generator software.

But what makes Kiran’s software unique? Though software that can translate tool bars, icons and menus into Telugu is currently available, his software goes a step further and can translate the entire text.

For instance, an English sentence such as:‘I am going to school every day with my friends’ initially comes out as ‘Nenu paatasalaki prati roju na mitrulato veltunnanu’. The same thing appears in Telugu a few moments later. Similarly, when a Yahoo web page is opened, the welcome note appears as ‘Yahooki swaagatam’. This is possible because of a unique dictionary, which Kiran developed to suit his specifications.

The budding innovator told this website's newspaper that he is fine tuning his software further so that it can be integrated with other systems so as to enable the user to listen to standard telephone messages in Telugu, get SMS messages and e-mails in Telugu and scroll English news messages in the visual media and convert movie sub-titles into Telugu.

Also, by using speech recognition software, ETT can convert spoken English into Telugu with the same voice.

Kiran exhibited his software during the RINL Formation Day celebrations held recently, where he won the appreciation of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) CMD Y Siva Sagara Rao.

Also, the Computer Society of India, city chapter, has commended his achievement.

Ougadi or Telugu New Year, an occasion for peace and sharing

A cultural show was held at the Mauritius Andhra Maha Sabha.
A cultural show was held at the Mauritius Andhra Maha Sabha.
Unlike many religious celebrations, Ougadi is not celebrated on the streets. The Telugu New Year remains very traditional with people having lunch or dinner with their relatives and cultural shows organised. Prayers and cakes distributed to relatives, friends and neighbours are also part of the festival celebrated last Saturday.

The day starts with a purifying wash – the mangala snaanam – before the sun on Saturday morning. Then, after put- ting on chandrika oil and massaging themselves with a paste made with cereals, the Telugus are ready to start the celebration of the creation of the Universe by the God Brahmâ.

The patchadi – a mixture of green mangoes, tamarind, lilac flowers, chilli and salt – is prepared and offered to God in a special prayer to ask for his protection. They then go to the temple where they are read the panchagam (Telegu almanac). This special day is also a time for decorative activities like the mugga, which are beautiful and colourful designs made with different seeds and spices.

The only discordant note last Saturday was the use of this religious celebration by some politicians for their own propaganda purposes. While Ougadi is supposed to be the occasion when messages of peace, fraternity and unity are sent out our politicians did not miss the occasion to… do politics.

Political misbehaviour

After opposition leader, Navin Ramgoolam, reminded the audience in his speech that there is a need to live in harmony and that no one should remain withdrawn from others, Pravind Jugnauth, deputy prime minister and minister of Finance, seized the opportunity to castigate him.

After implying that Navin Ramgoolam was finally recognising the good work done by the government in terms of national unity, he even spoke of the budget saying that the population should be aware that it was in the country’s interest.

Although the prime minister, Paul Bérenger, was not as direct, he nevertheless mentioned the criticisms against the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation, asserting that his government would propose new legislation after the next elections…
