AP, Karnataka to unitedly fight for Classical tag

MYSORE: In a bid to intensify the protest for classical status for Kannada and Telugu, intellectuals from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh have decided to join hands. As the first step, they will form a joint committee comprising of intellectuals and politicians from both the states by next month.

Announcing this in a press meet on Thursday, Andhra Pradesh Language Committee president A B K Prasad and noted writer D Javare Gowda said that both the states had decided to fight against the injustice done to them.

The duo said that the Centre was dilly-dallying to award classical tag to Kannada and Telugu, two prominent Dravidian languages which have long history.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has also favoured Tamil for awarding classical tag as Tamil Nadu MPs were more dominant in the UPA government, they said.

Prasad said Central Minister Maran had written to the Centre and National Committee of the Linguistics to revive the antiquity criteria to award classical tag.

Maran pressurised the Centre to consider at least 1500-2000 years of history of any language while awarding the status in the future.

They said Kannada and Telugu have the similar oral tradition, folklore, culture, scripts and antiquity par with Tamil.

Writer H S Krishnaswami Iyyengar, linguist Lingadevaru Halemane were present at the press meet.

In conversation with film producer KNT Sastry

Wednesday March 28 2007 11:18 IST

KNT Sastry is a wellknown film critic and producer. He has also produced seven documentaries including Surabhi which received the National Award for the Best Anthropological documentary.

His first feature film was తిలదానం (Tiladanam) which got an International award and was adjudged as the Best Asian Film. He served as a jury member in Sochi (Russia), Pusan (South Korea) and Vladivostock Film Festivals (Russia). He also served as jury member of the Indian Panorama and National Awards.

Tiladanam was the first Telugu film to get an international award and the first Indian film adjudged as Best Asian Film at Pusan International Film Festival. It also won the National Award, Golden Lotus, Indira Gandhi Award and Best First Film awards.

His other film కమలి (Kamli) was screened in the ongoing Hyderabad International Film Festival. His documentary Bullets from the Bauxtie too was screened. He shared his views on Telugu cinema and other issues with this website's newspaper.

He said it was nice that the International film festival was being conducted here. When asked about many Telugu film personalities criticizing that Telugu cinema has not been given due recognition in many film festivals, Sastry said it was the fault of Telugu directors and producers.

“What is there if you produce 200 films in a year. Most of them are remakes from other languages. If you make good films you will be definitely honoured. Blaming others for our fault is wrong.”

Sastry wondered why a classic movie like Maya Bazaar was not being screened in this festival. BN Reddy was one of the best directors we had, but his film was not available to be screened in the festival,” he said.

States like West Bengal, Karnataka and Kerala are extending financial support to encourage serious films. “They invite the directors and ask them to produce serious films. At least a dozen films of this nature come out every year in these languages. There is no financial support in our State,” he said.

If a director gets a Golden Lotus in those languages, governments gives lakhs of rupees to him. “Here I got Golden Lotus three times, but I did not get anything either from the government or from the industry,” he lamented.

“Before the death of Soundarya, I literally begged many committees for financial help to make Kamli. But nobody came forward and instead laughed at me. But, now this film is going for many film festivals,” he said proudly. Nandita Das played the lead role, after the sudden demise of Soundarya, who was the original choice for the lead.

Most of his documentaries and films are vying for film festivals. Social issues dominate his films. He draws his themes from the contemporary society. Kamli is about a girl child among the lambadas. They consider a girl in the family as an expendable commodity. The irresponsible and alcoholic husband tries to convince his wife to sell the girl child to overcome financial problems.

“The theme was based on a real life incident and a scene in the film too was actually a direct lift from my watchman’s life. I have been a witness to their fight at the hospital ward. Shafi has been so realistic and has done a fantastic job.

Nandita excells in Kamli’s role,” he said. But these films do not reached to all the audiences. He said the audience too watched and patronised regular masala like songs, story and entertainment.

“The audience too are interested in their favourite hero’s movies, his son’s movies etc. It is not a good sign”.

“There are few directors making serious films. My film was the first Telugu film to get an international award, and recently another young director Ramesh Domalapalli got this award,” he said.

There was no support from the industry or government for filmmakers like him, he added.

* * *

'సారాగొనె శివుడు లోక సంరక్షణకై' ...లోక సంరక్షణ కోసం శివుడు సారా తాగాడట! అవధాని చాతుర్యానికి పరీక్షపెట్టే ఈ సమస్యని క్షీరసాగర మథనానికి లంకె పెట్టి హాలాహలాన్ని శివుడు మనసారా తాగాడంటూ కడిమిళ్ల వరప్రసాద్‌ ఇలా పూరించారు.

'పారావారమున నందున

In conversation with రజనేష దోమలపల్లి

Rajnesh Domalpalli, a computer engineer in the US turned film maker making news with his first feature film వనజ (Vanaja), a narrative on the social structure in India. The Telugu film, set in the 1950-60s has bagged several awards including the 'Best Debut Feature' at the 2007 Berlin International Film Festival and the 'Gollapudi Srinivas Memorial Award' 2007. Interesting is the fact that most of the cast of the film has been drawn from the lower and middle class of society and have never faced a camera. Rajnesh spoke to Mythily Ramachandran on his experiences in making his debut film 'Vanaja.'

You mentioned that your maiden film, 'Vanaja' is a narrative on the social structure set in the 1950's- 60's, yet relevant today. Can you please explain?

The film presents the barriers within our rural society. Although there has been some change in attitudes in our rural communities, many issues of then are still relevant now.
In one of the scenes involving a temple, I had asked extras to sit on the steps, arranging them into groups to provide some background activity. To our surprise there was a violent reaction from bystanders, since they belonged to the lower class.

The film has a cast with no background in acting and come from the low/middle class background. Was it not difficult training them?

Yes, most of them belong to Hyderabad's middle and lower-classes. I love working with non-professionals, because of their eagerness to learn. Besides, they carry with them life's experiences. Some were from the labor camps and they came to earn more. But once they began to grapple with the intricacies of acting, they realized that self-expression was a significant opportunity too.

As far as training them was concerned, I had studied under a brilliant instructor at Columbia University, Prof. Lenore DeKoven, whose teachings I was able to draw upon while training my actors. When I first found Mamatha Bhukya (Vanaja) in her school, I wasn't keen on selecting her. I found her hair too short. But I now realize how lucky I am.. She progressed from the basics to what you see on screen today.

And training Mamatha in Kuchipudi?

Srinivas Devarakonda, a disciple of Dr. Vempatti Chinna Satyam started her on basic adavus in March 2004 progressing to jatis and finally to the five items we had choreographed for the film. Shooting commenced in January 2005 and what you see on screen is what Mamatha learnt in ten months.

Which member of the cast do you think rose beyond your expectations?

Every single one. How could I possibly single out anyone?

Now that the film is ready for release, are they back to their former livelihood?

Unfortunately everyone has returned to their old profession. Perhaps some day, alternative films will have a market and more filmmakers will feel comfortable taking in non-professionals. And then, those who have worked in 'Vanaja' will find a role.

How long did it take to work on the film?

I started writing the story at the end of the first semester at Columbia. It was almost done by the end of the fourth..

Any overwhelming moment you wish to share?

We were shooting this scene in which a soothsayer tells Vanaja that she will become a great dancer one day. We were having a difficult time that night. It was late and everyone was exhausted. That night, I suddenly woke up with a start. I realized that we had missed shooting an essential line of the scene. It was, "If I tell you that only Goddess Parvati will match you in dance, what you will give me?" We re-shot the scene the next day, feeling grateful to the powers that be.

What prompted you to quit your job in the Silicon Valley in California?

While doing my engineering at IIT, I used to write short stories. I also learnt Carnatic music around the same time. Photography came a bit later when I could afford a good camera in the US. Add acting to this and you have most of the essentials of filmmaking.
I enjoyed my work no doubt, but it was only when I did a few courses in creative writing at a local community college in California, I realized that I had to make the switch. I set my heart on Columbia University because of its stylistic emphasis on the screenplay. Since I lacked a film background, I knew I was against heavy odds. So I did courses in acting, art history, voice control, elements of design, photography and writing before applying to Columbia University in 2001. I graduated with 'Vanaja' in 2006.

One of your stories, 'Dowry' has been broadcast by BBC. Any other story that has won recognition?

Yes, 'Dowry' was broadcast by BBC's World Service in Sept 1984 and Aug 1989. Another story, 'Akka' was a finalist in BBC's International Short Story Competition 2001.

What about your other interest, Carnatic music?

I learnt to play the veena at IIT Mumbai from Radha Srisailam, my professor's wife. In the US, I studied vocal from Jayashree Varadarajan in California. M.S. Subbulakshmi is my favorite.

How supportive has your family been?

Both my parents are very supportive, although my father was very concerned in the beginning about my switch from computer engineering. My mother is the pillar I lean on.

The film has received quite a many awards. Tell us about it.

The major award was the 'Best Debut Feature' at the 2007 Berlin international film festival. The others include, 'Best Narrative Feature' at the 2006 IAAC, New York; 'Special International Jury Prize' at the 2007 Cairo Children's film festival; Gollapudi Srinivas Memorial Award 2007; 'Faculty Select Screenplay' at Columbia University; and a 'special mention', at the 2006 Hampton's international film festival.

Who is your favorite actor?

I don't have a favorite actor. But I admire Satyajit Ray for his lyrical style and socially relevant subjects as in 'Pather Panchali.' I also admire John Cassavetes' and his films especially, 'Woman under the Influence.' I love Zhang Yimou for his visual mastery. I enjoyed Emir Kusturica's 'Underground.'

What relaxes you after work?

The company of friends.

A German delegation in AP

BHADRACHALAM: For the German delegation from Altlandsburg town, the route to Telugu-German friendship is through the lip-smacking and taste bud-tickling Telugu delicacies.

The tangy and spicy Telugu culinary repertoire, which includes Gongura chutney, prawn curries and fish preparations, is making these Germans want more.

"Telugu food is simply amazing. It's very tasty. I like the non-vegetarian dishes more", said Altlandsburg Lions Club president Andreas Rojenberg. "We tasted Telugu food at Bhavani Islands near Vijayawada"

"The food was delectably tasty", said Red Cross Society general secretary Frank Langish. The lunch and dinner are okay for them. However, Telugu tiffins are a big No No for this German team led by the thirdtime Mayor of Altlandsburg and a Telugu expatriate Gujjula Ravinder Reddy.

On a study-cum-participatory service tour to Andhra Pradesh, where Reddy has taken up tsunami and cyclone relief work, this nine-member team is also worried about high pesticide and chemical fertiliser content in Indian vegetables.

"Our agricultural produce is cultivated through organic farming and is low on synthetic chemical pesticides and fertilisers," said team members Angelica and Gaby.

The team members also visited the Bhadrachalam Rama temple on Tuesday and watched the temple rituals and special poojas with lot of interest. They also enquired about the epic tale of Ramayana from the Vedic scholars present at the temple. Gujjula Ravinder Reddy, their Mayor, was their interlocutor.

U G Krishnamurti an enigma

Bangalore, March 24: U G Krishnamurti was an enigma who defied all classifications - a philosopher, a non-guru or guru and is described as "subversive and revolutionary and totally fearless."

UG, as he was lovingly called by his friends and admirers all over the world, blasted all spiritual discourses as "poppycock" and thrashed the spiritual masters as "misguided fools."

"A messiah is the one who leaves a mess behind him in the world." "Religions have promised roses but you end up with only thorns," were among the quotable quotes of UG who also detested being called an enlightened man.

"People call me an "enlightened man-- I detest that term -- they can`t find any other word to describe the way I am functioning," he would say. "At the same time, I would point out that there is no such thing as enlightenment at all."

Born into a Telugu-speaking Brahmin family on July 9, 1918 in the coastal town of Masulipatam in Andhra Pradesh, UG lost his mother when he was seven days old and was brought up by his maternal grandfather, a noted, wealthy lawyer and a prominent member of the Theosophical Society.

UG grew up in a peculiar milieu of theosophy and orthodox Hindu religious beliefs and practices.

After schooling in Gudivada town, he did his B.A. Honours course in philosophy and psychology at Madras University. "Where is this mind these chaps have been talking about," he once asked his psychology teacher when hardly 20 years.

Between 14 and 21 years of age, he spent seven years off and on with Swami Sivananda in Rishikesh, practising yoga and meditation but questioned the validity of the various mystical visions and experiences.

When he was 21 years old, UG met Sri Ramana Maharshi and asked him "this thing called Moksha, can you give it to me". "I can give it but can you take it," Ramana said, a reply that set him up on a relentless search for truth that ended at the age of 49.

UG joined Theosophical Society as a lecturer and gave talks on theosophy in the country and European nations. He met J Krishnamurti, known as an unconventional spiritual teacher, and fiercely discussed spiritual matters but he later rejected JK`s philosophy, calling it a "bogus chartered journey."

During this period, he also underwent a mystical experience what he sometimes described as "a death experience." But he brushed it all aside and moved on.

UG moved to America with his family for medical treatment of his son`s polio condition in 1955 and took to lecturing for a fee to meet the expenses. At the end of the second year, he lost interest in lecturing and 17 years of his marriage ended.

After aimless wanderings in London and Paris, he landed in Geneva and found a refuge in Valentine De Kerven`s chalet in Saanen. It was a prelude to his "clinical death" on his 49th birthday in 1967 and for seven days, seven bewildering physical changes took place and he landed in what he called the "natural state".

UG usually stayed with his friends or in small rented apartments but never stayed in one place for more than six months. He would say he had "no message for mankind" but thousands the world over would flock to listen to his "anti-teaching."

His first book, "The Mystique of Enlightenment", put together by Rodney Arms, appeared in 1982.

UG rejected the notion of soul or atman and declared that our search for permanence was the cause of our suffering.

"He was well known for striking down not only the edifices we have so carefully built in our minds but the foundations of human thought as a whole. UG was truly enigmatic, subversive and revolutionary, and totally fearless," UG`s friends and admirers say.

Temple of Knowledge continues to flourish

KADAPA: From time immemorial a library is considered as storehouse of information.

Name a topic and a reference to it will be available at these temples of knowledge.

There are some libraries, which stand as a memorial to great deeds of some great people and one such library is CP Brown Library in Kadapa. Brown's contribution to Telugu literature is immense and he was responsible for not only bringing out Telugu Dictionary but was also responsible for conserving Yogi Vemana literary works and several precious manuscripts of Telugu literature.

But, the man behind CP Brown Library, now considered as an important land mark in Kadapa is Janumadhi Hanumathsastry, a noted scholar and academician.

It was his relentless struggle that saw the emergence of CP Brown Memorial Trust, which is behind the development of CP Brown Library. In 1976, noted literary personality Arudra identified the place in Kadapa, where CP Brown used to live and work. A suggestion was made to the then collector of Kadapa P L Sanjeeva Reddy for setting up a library in memory of CP Brown, but only after a decade, that is in 1986, the first foundation for the library was made. CP Brown Memorial Trust with C R Sampath Kumar as its president and Janumandhi Hanumathsastry as secretary was formed. District Collector was its chief patron.

CP Brown had sold the estate in Kadapa, when he left the country and returned to London. Later it came into possession of C R Krishna Swamy, father of C R Sampath Kumar. Sampath Kumar donated 20 cents of the 15 acre land to the trust for setting up the library.

The then collector J Hari Narayana sanctioned Rs 3.5 lakh for the construction of the library, while leading lawyer and president of Kadapa Town Development Association G Krishnamurth y donated Rs 43,000. Chandana Khan, A K Farad and other bureaucrats, who worked in Kadapa also donated for the cause. School students in Kadapa and Proddatur had donated Rs 25,000.

But it was the contribution of Rs 10 by a casual labourer in Bastar district of Madhya Pradesh, which stands out. Inspired by an article written in Andhra Prabha weekly by Janumadhi, he had made the donation. On January 2, 1987, foundation stone for CP Brown Library was laid and the construction was completed in 1995. Prominent freedom fighter Vavilala Gopalakrishnaiah in presence of the then Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu inaugurated the library.

Several scholars and academicians in the country had donated valuable books to the library. Collections in the library include works of G Krishna Murthy, Aurobindo, books on Buddhism, Vivekananda, Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. Not only of literature, but books on engineering and medicines have also found place in the shelves of CP Brown library.

It has 32 rarest books, which were microfilmed by American Library Congress. They are not available elsewhere in the world.

The three volumes of original manuscripts of CP Brown Telugu dictionary, 60 books on Vemana literature, orginal handwritten manuscripts of Puttaparthi Narayanacharyulu, Janamanchi Sheshadri Sharma, Diwakarla Venkatavadhani and others are also among the collections of the library.

On Sunday, the library has 32,000 books, one of the best collection in the State. In 2005, CP Brown Library was handed over to the State Government and Sri Venkateswara University and later Yogi Vemana University were entrusted with the task of maintaining it continues to flourish CP Brown Library in Kadapa Janumadhi Hanumathsastry.

CHENNAI: రజనేష్ దోమలపల్లి (Rajanesh Domalapalli) has been chosen for the `Gollapudi Srinivas National Award 2006' for his debut Telugu film వనజ (Vanaja).

Announcing the award at a press conference here on Friday, Gollapudi Maruthi Rao, managing trustee, Gollapudi Srinivas Memorial Foundation, said the film was selected from 17 nominations across the country in several languages including Marathi, Malayalam, Hindi and Tamil. This year, a film made in Sonpa, a dialect of Arunachal Pradesh without a script, was also received for nomination.

Terming it as a richly deserved award, he said several factors, such as realistic and impeccable casting and music of the film, bagged the award for Mr. Domalapalli.

Govind Nihalani, director and jury member, appreciated the directors of the nominated films for their courage to choose different scripts and not yield in to the demands of the mainstream market.

`Vanaja' is the story of a young girl, a victim of sexual exploitation, who stands up for her dignity and moves on in life.

Unlike several films on similar themes, the film breaks through stereotypes and sustains an element of hope, he said. Mr. Domalapalli was chosen for his command over the craft of filmmaking and impact of the film.

Singeetham Srinivasa Rao, director and jury member, said it was an understated film without melodrama. Mr. Domalapalli would be honoured with the award and a cash prize of Rs.1.5 lakh at a function on August 12.

Google News in Telugu

It pulls in news links and article stubs from Hindi news sites like (Hindustan Dainik) etc. The cool part is the internal conversion of proprietary fonts of non-unicode sites like दैनिक भास्कर and हिन्दुस्तान दैनिक into unicode. This is good because the major Telugu news sites are not in Unicode.

Some of the news sources in the Telugu version of Google News will be

GOOGLE...we are eagerly awaiting the correct contents of the following link

Delhi: Maestros' homage to Thyagaraja

VENKATESAN SRIKANTH

A feast of Carnatic music was on offer in the Capital as Trichur V. Ramachandran and T. M. Krishna performed at a festival in memory of Tyagaraja.

TYAGARAJA'S RICHES Trichur V. Ramachandran

The four-day Thyagaraja Music Festival organised by Sree Shanmukhananda Sangeetha Sabha at the Andhra Pradesh Bhawan in the Capital recently began on a luminous note with the concert of the senior most vidwan of the illustrious GNB school, Trichur V. Ramachandran.

Ramachandran's opening piece was an Adi tala varnam in the raga Nattakuranji, with even some lively swaraprastaras towards the end. This was followed by a choice and thoughtful విదులకు మ్రొక్కేద (Vidulaku Mrokkeda) in the raga Mayamalavagowla, in which Tyagaraja makes obeisance, among others, to all the great beings who are well versed in music. Yet another Tyagaraja composition, జ్ఞానముసకరాద (Gnanamusakaradha) in the raga Poorvikalyani, was marked with a scintillating alap of the raga, niraval of the phrase పరమాత్ముముడు జీవాత్ముడు (Paramatmudu Jeevatmudu) and swaraprastaras rich in creativity.

In a concert dominated by Tyagaraja kritis, his Pancharatna kriti too found a place in Ramachandran's scheme of presentation. It was the third Pancharatna kriti, సాధించనె (Sadinchane) in the raga Arabi that was presented. (Lavanya Rama) in the raga Rudrapriya, ఒరజూపు (Orajupu) in Kannada Gowla and ధరని తెలుసుకొంటి (Dharani telusukonti) in the raga Suddha Saveri had a scholarly touch. While presenting దుర్మార్గచారా (Durmargachara) in the raga Ranjani and సుఖి ఎవ్వరొ (Sukhi Yevvaro) in the raga Kanada, emotions associated with these ragas flowed.

Ramachandran's main song was "Etavunara" in the raga Kalyani, which was marked by an excellent alap, niraval of the phrase (Sreegarudaku Tyagaraja kararchitha) from the charanam portion of the kriti, and swaraprastaras lively and rich in creativity. In all, Ramachandran packed as many as nine kirits of Tyagaraja, including one Pancharatna kriti, in the main session of his concert (before the tani avartanam), giving a complete flavour of the `GNB baani' in kriti presentation as well as manodharma aspects.

T.M. Krishna

Traditional values

In another concert in this series, it was again the traditional values of Carnatic music that came to the fore. T. M. Krishna, a disciple of the legendary late Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, captivated the hearts of the rasikas in his recital of close to three hours. Krishna began his concert with an Adi tala varnam in the raga Saveri in two speeds. Tyagaraja's "Janakiramana" in the raga Suddha Simandhini was emotive and marked with crisp swaraprastaras. Yet another Tyagaraja's kriti, "Seetapate" in the raga Khamas, was well presented, bringing the raga and the sahitya bhava to the fore.

An ashtapadi of Jayadeva, "Vadasi yadi kinchit", in the raga Mukhari was presented with the emotions of this raga overflowing. Earlier, Krishna presented an outstanding alap of this raga. Gopala Krishna Bharati's "Pavi Yezhai" in the raga Todi was marked by an excellent alap, niraval of the phrase "Uttru Parkka Satre Vilaghado Maadu" and swaraprastaras rich in creativity.

Krishna's recital included a ragam-taanam-pallavi too, giving a `music festival' touch. He presented the pallavi "Lambodara lakumikara ambasuta amara vinuta" in the raga Nattakurinji, set to Tisra jaati Triputa tala. Incidentally, these words of the pallavi are from the geetam "Sri Gananatha" taught to beginners of Carnatic music. After presenting swaraprastaras in the raga Nattakurinji, Krishna followed up with rich ragamalika swaraprastaras in the ragas Kalyani, Kanada and Malahari — the raga in which this geetam has originally been composed. Ragam-taanam-pallavi is considered a sign of an advanced level of achievement in a concert presentation. Krishna's selection of a simple phrase carved from a geetam for the pallavi presentation seems akin to the concept of `simple living, high thinking'. Earlier, he presented a fine alap of Nattakurinji, following it with a melodious taanam.

H.N. Bhaskar on the violin, Umayalpuram Mali on the mridangam and Tiruchi Murali, all youngsters, provided excellent accompaniment in the both these concerts, enhancing their overall outcome. While accompanying the senior vidwan Ramachandran, these youngsters rose to expectations, and while accompanying Krishna, a youngster himself, they displayed their enthusiastic team spirits.

Women, Art and the Caste System

Written and directed by Rajnesh Domalpalli for his MFA thesis at Columbia University, Vanaja made its world premiere at the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival. This coming-of-age drama, shot with a cast of non-professional first-time actors in rural southern India, received an even greater honor when it was given the Best First Feature Award last month at the 2007 Berlinale.

The film follows the aspirations of the title character, a 14-year-old daughter of a poor fisherman who starts working for the village landlady as she aims to escape caste and class to learn Kuchipudi dance. Her intelligence and independence both help and hinder this undertaking, with her life becoming even more complex when she falls into an uneven relationship with the landlady's much older son, recently returned from the U.S., and who is running for office. "Matters escalate," concludes the film's official synopsis, "spiraling downwards and she is pitched into a tale of class, family and animus from which there is only one escape."

Domalpalli explains the creation of his debut:
Vanaja was written as a project submission for my first semester class at Columbia University in the fall of 2001. Inspired by a child's scream in the film Sophie's Choice, it was to be a tale about mother-child separation, but as it developed over the next three semesters, it gradually took on the elements of class distinction and conflict that continue to infuse our society and culture even today.

Pre-production began early in 2004. The first hurdle was finding appropriate talent and crew in a state where most filming was big-budget Tollywood -- the Telugu language version of Bollywood that was particular to our state of Andhra Pradesh. Given the rural nature of the story, and the tendency of most local acting to lean towards the theatrical, it was clear that non-actors drawn from hutments, labor camps and the vast Indian middle class were the right choice. They would have to be put through lengthy acting training, the lead would have to learn Kuchipudi dance -- no easy task, and the landlady would have to learn Carnatic classical music -- if the film were to have any sense of authenticity at all.
He goes on to describe the extensive and difficult casting process, the selection of lead actor Mamatha Bhukya (who subsequently received a year of acting and dance training), the challenge of scouting and selecting locations for filming, and the "nightmare" of acquiring an elephant for the shoot, which kicked off in Jan. 2005.

Domalpalli concludes:
When shooting did commence, on January 13, looking through a Super 16mm film lens for the first time was a great shock for me, having never shot film before. All of my previous projects were video shorts -- which had a very different aspect ratio -- one that had dictated all of my storyboarding and camera moves. But DP Milton Kam’s reassuring and supporting presence, a crew that realized that making a Telugu language independent film such as this was worth pouring life blood into, and a cast that was nervous yet rearing to go, made all the difference in giving the film a momentum that sent it sailing. For any independent film to succeed, a hundred miracles need to happen, and we feel grateful that in our case they all did.

The filmmaker recently started publishing trailers for the film online as it moves on to other festivals -- including here in Madison -- following its success at the Berlinale. The latest version can be viewed below.

Reviews of Vanaja have been published in Variety and by Oscar Peyrou for the International Federation of Film Critics, who describes it as "relevant and strong both socially and politically, due to its brave denunciation of the obsolete caste system which doubly discriminates against women."

More information about Vanaja can be found in its IMDB profile and Wikipedia entry, as well as in program details presented by the Toronto International Film Festival and the Berlinale.

Star India, Balaji Telefilms join hands for Telugu channel

SONALI KRISHNA

TIMES NEWS NETWORK
[ TUESDAY, MARCH 13, 2007 01:24:42 AM]

MUMBAI: Star India, in its second attempt to enter the southern market, is joining hands with the content major Balaji Telefilms to float a separate company for a Telugu language channel. People close to the development said that the new venture will be a 50:50 JV between STAR and Balaji Telefilms, and the two partners will invest Rs 100-150 crore.

“All the paper work is currently being processed, and the deal has been given the nod by STAR Hong Kong. The announcement is likely to take place in the next two weeks,” a source said.

The decision to partner with Balaji comes from the fact that the south poses large entry barriers for any newcomer thanks to Kalanithi Maran’s Sun Network’s monopolistic position both on the content and distribution side.

Also Balaji Telefilms, in which STAR already holds 26%, has been producing Telugu, Kannada, Malyalam and Tamil software for close to eight years now, and are currently exclusive vendors for the Sun.

As a practice, Sun TV has inked exclusive contracts with all the major content providers down south, disallowing the production houses to supply to any other broadcaster.

STAR will now get a secure content provider, while for Balaji it would mean assured revenue down south. But the Jeetendra-promoted company, which has been struggling for a while now to get on to Sun’s prime time, will have to totally get off the Sun Network. Both STAR and Balaji Telefilms refused to comment on the issue.

STAR’s entry into the other regional markets will give the media house a substantial regional presence, apart from growing its viewer base. This will also allow it to bundle advertising packages on a higher premium and command better subscription rates.

However, the going may not be so easy, as the distribution landscape down south is also largely controlled by Sun’s cable arm Sumangali Cable Vision (SCV). The upside, however, is that the Telugu market is not so cluttered with the cable industry largely fragmented. The good news for STAR is that Hathway, in which STAR already holds 26% is a significant player and this would help STAR leverage its presence.

Book Review:

Telugu literary and cultural heritage

P.V.L.N.RAO

TELUGU PASIDI: Mandali Buddhaprasad, Guttikonda Subbarao, Dr. G.V. Purnachand — Editors; Immadisetty Akkeswararao Charitable Trust, Singarajuvari Street, Kothapeta, Vijayawada-520001. Rs. 300.

THIS VOLUME published by the Krishna District Writers' Association to commemorate the golden jubilee of the formation of Andhra Pradesh comprises 112 essays in 14 sections which provide a panoramic view of the state's progress in various fields such as language (20), literature (30) and culture and so on.

In the introductory write-up, Nanduri Ramamohanrao observes that Andhra (the term appeared in the Aitareya Brahmanam 1500 B.C.) and Telugu are synonymous although their connotations differ at times.

Tracing the evolution of the language, B. Krishnamurthy stresses the need of reforms for adoption of the mother tongue in administration, education and other societal transactions. R.V.S. Sundaram regrets the negligence of a potential international language with the Telugu University lagging behind in research and development. The literary scenario looks brighter. Soliloquies of R.Bhardwaj, P.Jagannatham, J.Hanumatsastri, S.Veeraraju and T. Janakirani inspire the younger generation. Giant strides are made in poetry, short story and novel. Neo-classical, romantic and modern streams embellish Telugu poetry.

While the first Jnanapith award winner Viswanatha was a multifaceted colossus, the second C. Narayana Reddy excels in creativity and innovation. Rayaprolu, Devulapalli, Sri Sri, Jashua and Prasadaraya Kulapati are master trendsetters with a large following.

Popular magazines provide a platform to short stories and novels enabling writers to explore the cultural, social and political ramifications of life. Chalam, Palagummi, Gopichand, Kalipatnam, Madhurantakam, Ravisastry and Butchibabu are comparable to the best writers of this genre. Y. Lakshmiprasad sums up the pivotal contribution of Andhras in national development — three presidents, three Lok Sabha speakers and one prime minister. Quite a few Telugu leaders headed national parties such as the Congress, BJP and Communist. In journalism earlier stalwarts like C.Y.Chintamani, M.Chalapatirao, K. Iswaradutt and G.K. Reddy became motivators with their intrepid writings. With excellent contributions to performing arts like drama, music, dance and folk arts, many Telugu scholars enriched the cultural heritage.

This volume is an invaluable asset to research scholars, students, professors and politicians.
