Open Handset Alliance and Telugu Unicode

With the launch of the Open Handset Alliance (OHA) and Android platform today by a group of more than 30 technology and mobile companies, including Google, we can expect their Linux-based phones to roll sometime next year. Penetrating a market dominated by Symbian will not be easy, but it is certainly not impossible for an initiative backed by the Mountain View technology giant.

A less observed tangential news from Ascender Corporation, which is also part of the OHA, is seen here: Ascender Corp. Provides Fonts to Open Handset Alliance

"Ascender is developing a collection of fonts that will be delivered as part of the Android platform. The fonts will be used as part of the User Interface and will provide support for multiple languages."

Does this mean all (or some) future Linux phones based on the Android platform will be loaded with Ascender's fonts by default? If so, will that include South Asian languages (like Telugu) also? If not, will it still be easier to put in multilingual fonts and get Telugu unicode rendered perfectly on mobile browsers installed on the Android OS?

Only time will tell...

To start with..let's wait for their SDK which is releasing on November 12th, and see the features it contains.

'Ultimate' Office software in Telugu released

To be made available free of cost in Government offices

HYDERABAD: Telugu language took another step into the computer era on Monday when the Andhra Pradesh Official Languages Commission released a Telugu software CD for use in Government officers and outside.

The software is described as one step ahead of the two existing software already available -- I-LEAP (a private one) and another released by the Union Ministry of Information & Broadcasting. The latest software, described as `ultimate and all encompassing', has been developed jointly by the National Informatics Centre and Dr. Marri Channa Reddy Human Resources Development Institute.

This "open office" software can be used without any restriction or difficulty by all computers loaded with open office and MS office facilities for writing a file, striking off written matter, drawing of tables and graphs, even for presentations through various designs.

Releasing the CD at a press conference here, Commission chairman A.B.K. Prasad said it would be made available free of cost to all Government offices to start with and later to all interested parties and persons depending on the Government budget.

Guruji.com, India's first search engine has announced the launch of Indian language search. The first phase of launch will cover Hindi, Telugu and Kannada language search. This will help the users to get accurate search results in their language and thus will improve their search experience.

The Desi search engine provides a simple but very effective language interface. Guruji.com has launched the most comprehensive Indian language search engine covering a range of specific content - news, entertainment, travel, astrology, literature, business, education and more.

Anurag Dod, Co-Founder & CEO, Guruji.com, said, "What sets us apart is our focus on the Indian market and the Indian consumer. China has become a big internet economy because of content availability and accessibility in local language. If India were to grow at the same rate, we need more focus on vernacular. It's only then we would have truly empowered the Indian consumers."

Gaurav Mishra, Co-Founder & COO, Guruji.com, explains, "90% of internet search queries are local in nature, and Guruji.com will deliver better search results than any other search engine in these instances. The next wave of growth for internet in India will be fuelled by the growth of vernacular content and the way it is accessed by consumers across the country and the Indian language search engine from guruji is a step in that direction."
