ఈ-గ్రంధాలయ: Library books a click away

HYDERABAD: Finding the book that you want from a public library will become an easy task with the help of an application software to be installed in libraries in the state soon.

The software, ఈ-గ్రంధాలయ (e-Grandhalaya), will be installed in all government libraries in the state in a phased manner. With this facility the number of books on a particular subject or an author and any such details can be had at the click of a mouse.

About 45,000 old and selected Telugu books have already been digitised under the e-Digital Library Project. e-Grandhalaya, developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC), will be provided free of cost to the department of public libraries and implemented in 30 regional and district libraries to start with.

There are about 1,800 public libraries in the state and these will be covered in a phased manner.e-Grandhalaya is a catalogue software that will be connected to a central control at NIC in Hyderabad.

A database of the nearly 2 crore books will be stored here and the software made available at all the libraries. A workshop to train librarians in the use of this software began here on Tuesday.

"The software will be installed in two or three computers in each library,"said director of public libraries S Ravi Kumar.

The software is already in use in Bangalore. Once all the regional and district libraries are covered, it will be extended to mandal-level libraries.
