Telugu play 'SramaNakaM' ( శ్రమణకం ) performed

HYDERABAD: The Telugu play, Sramanakam, written by D Vijaya Bhaskar, based on the novel of Dr N Lakshmi Parvathi, was presented at Ravindra Bharathi on Saturday, by the troupe from Guruprasad Memorial Academy.

The historical theme dealt with male chauvinism resented by Sundari in the age of Buddhism. It demolishes the myth that feminism is a feature of modern society.

The play suggests that it is futile to involve oneself in discussions about the validity of rituals, and instead one should be concerned more about humanism. The play traces how, after Prince Gauthama leaves the palace in search of truth, the kingdom is sought to be occupied by opportunists.

Later Sundari, inspired by the teachings of Buddha, fights and destroys the enemies of the throne and restores the royalty. Sundari also asks Buddha to permit housewives to embrace Buddhism and serve the cause of truth and non-violence.

This stream of Buddhism came to be known as Sramanakam. It was a ten-act play and was presented in an absorbing manner.

Y K Nageswara Rao, the well-known actor portrayed the role of Buddha with clarity of diction and exuding pious dignity. K R K Murthy as Kuta Datta, Chitta Sankar as Deva Datta, Srivalli as Sundari, A K Sridevi as Yasodhara, enacted their roles perfectly.

The play was presented as part of late NTR’s 83rd birth anniversary organised by NTR Educational Society.
