'Time to enforce Telugu in State'

KURNOOL: Chairman of Official Language Commission A.B.K. Prasad has called upon lovers of Telugu language to reinfuse life into the language which was in dire straits. Collector Vikas Raj, Mayor S. Raghurami Reddy, Member of the Official Language Commission R. Chandrasekhar Reddy, Kalva Mallaiah and others were present.

Addressing a meeting of తెలుగు వికాస భాషోత్సవం (Telugu Vikasa Bhashotsavam) here on Friday, he said it was unfortunate that even five decades after formation of linguistic States, Telugu language was in implementation stage.

He said while the people of neighbouring States like Karnataka and Tamil Nadu love to speak in their mother tongue, Telugu people found it an insult to speak in their own language. He said a time has come that serious steps were needed to enforce Telugu in the State.

Collector Vikas Raj said a change in the attitude of people was more important than the administrative decision to popularise the language. Those who returned from abroad were under the impression that they were distancing themselves from the culture. He said it was nothing wrong to love one's own language but it was unfair to insult other languages. Mr. Rachapalem Chandrasekhar Reddy said loss of language was nothing less than death of the Telugu culture. He called for a mission to protect Telugu language.
