Archaeologists stumble upon five caskets at Bavikonda

HYDERABAD : The relic of the Buddha, unearthed at Bavikonda in Visakhapatnam district, will be on permanent display for the public viewing at the State Archaeological Museum, Public Gardens here, from January 2.

The Dalai Lama will inaugurate the 16th enclosure of the museum on the day named Holy Relic Gallery containing this rare possession marking its platinum jubilee. Union Ministers and Chief Minister Y.S. Rajsekhara Reddy will be present.

Free entry

The Government has decided to allow free entry into the gallery for a month, which, however, may be extended by another month. Apart from locals, thousands of Buddhist monks and pilgrims attending Kalachakra at Amaravathi are expected to visit the relic which has so far been kept in a strongroom for security reasons and shown only to VIPs on Buddha punima festival days.

The Bavikonda relic is held as unique and religiously significant unlike such corporal remains of the Buddha recovered at 17 other relic sites out of 155 Buddhist centres in the State, including Amaravathi, Bhattiprolu and Nagarjunakonda.

It was the first time in history of excavations in the State that archaeologists stumbled upon five caskets at a single place, Bavikonda, containing the relics.

This assumed significance because the finding of a single casket itself is normally held very high.

One such relic was to be transported from the State and displayed in Sri Lanka amidst tight security.

One lakh collections

The massive edifice of the museum in spotless white also stands out. It has one lakh collections to its credit, including an Egyptian mummy gifted by the Nizams, in contrast to 50,000 articles possessed by Salar Jung Museum, according to Minister for Archaeology N. Rajyalakshmi.

She and J. Kedareswari, director, Archaeology, said here on Friday that the relic would be covered by bullet-proof glass dome which has a facility to open up made by Godrej. As an additional security measure, a closed circuit TV will be installed at the enclosure for raising alarm if anybody comes as close as 4 ft when the enclosure is locked during nights.

On the occasion, the Government will bring out special publications on the Buddha relics and open a special museum at Amaravathi showcasing sculptures from 12 sites -- Chandavaram, Dhulikatta, Budham, Nandayepalem, Kesanapalli, Aluru, Vardhamanakota, Takkelapadu, Tirumalagiri, Nelakondapalli, Dhupadu and Bapatla.

వ్యాపారం చేయడంలేదు
కాలచక్ర వేడుకల సందర్భంగా నార్బులింగ ఇన్స్‌స్టిట్యూట్‌ వ్యాపారం చేయడంలేదని కెలసాంగ్‌ ఈష్‌ అన్నారు. వివిధ దేశాల నుంచి వస్తున్న ప్రముఖులకు వసతి సౌకర్యం కోసం ఏసీ సూట్లు నిర్మించామని ఇందులో వ్యాపార కోణం లేదన్నారు. కాలచక్ర కార్యక్రమం పూర్తయ్యేంతవరకు సామాన్యులకు రూ.800కే వసతి ఏర్పాటుచేశామని ఒక్కో టెంట్‌లో ఐదుగురు చొప్పున ఉండొచ్చన్నారు. రోజుకు 11 రూపాయలు మాత్రమే అవుతుందని వివరించారు. కాలచక్ర బోధనల సందర్భంగా నిర్వహణ ఖర్చుల కోసమే ఇలా చేస్తున్నామని తెలిపారు. అమరావతిలో మాంసాహారాన్ని తాము వద్దంటున్నామని కెలసాంగ్‌ ఈష్‌ తెలిపారు. తాము కేటాయించిన స్థలాల్లో తాత్కాలిక హోటళ్లు నిర్మించిన వారు, టెంట్లను తీసుకొన్నవారి నుంచి మాంసాహారం తయారు చేయబోమని హామీపత్రం తీసుకున్నామన్నారు.

ప్రత్యేక వైద్యవిభాగం భేష్‌..
కాలచక్ర సందర్భంగా వచ్చేవారికి వైద్య సేవలకోసం అమరావతి ప్రభుత్వాసుపత్రిలో ప్రత్యేక వైద్య విభాగాన్ని తాత్కాలికంగా ఏర్పాటు చేయడం అభినందనీయమని కెలసాంగ్‌ ఈష్‌ అన్నారు. చలిప్రదేశం నుంచి వచ్చినబౌద్ధులకు ఒక్కసారిగా వేడి వాతావరణం సరిపోక ఇబ్బందులు ఎదురయ్యే అవకాశం ఉందని, దీన్ని గుర్తించిన ప్రభుత్వం ఈ ఏర్పాటు చేయడం బౌద్ధులకు సేవచేయడమేనన్నారు. ఈ కార్యక్రమంలో ఉడా ఛైర్మన్‌ మల్లాది విష్ణు, ఎమ్మెల్యే డొక్కా మాణిక్యవరప్రసాద్‌, కాలచక్ర నిర్వహణ ప్రత్యేకాధికారి చల్లా విజయమోహన్‌ పాల్గొన్నారు.

Plan to build `stupa' at Amaravathi

Norbulingka Institute to bear all expenses for 1,500 monks who will conduct the rituals

• Skin diseases reported among Tibetan visitors
• 63 doctors deployed at the hospital and a 20-bedded ward specially earmarked for visitors
• Tibetan visitors advised caution

GUNTUR: The Dharamshala-based Norbulingka Institute, which is organising the Kalachakra 2006, will construct a stupa as a memorial for the event taking place here from January 5 to 16.

The former Tibet Prime Minister and organising committee chairman Kelshang Yeshi told reporters at a press conference here on Friday that they did not mean to make it a one-time affair, but wanted the event to put Amaravathi on international Buddhist circuit. "We wish to continue our association with Amaravathi even after the event is over," he added.

Medical facilities

The Norbulingka Institute thanked the State Government for providing one of the best infrastructure facilities with all basic amenities. A 10-bedded special ward was inaugurated at the Government Hospital for the Kalachakra and ambulances kept ready. The Norbulingka also set up a special clinic.

Some skin diseases were reported among several Tibetan visitors, who came to the clinic for medicines. Sixty-three doctors from all disciplines were deployed at the hospital and a 20-bed ward was specially earmarked at Guntur Government General Hospital for the visitors.

When asked about the high tariff on tents, the Norbulingka representatives explained that they had to bear the overheads on several aspects of organising the event including paying the power bill.

The institute is bearing all expenses for the 1,500 monks who will be conducting all the rituals.

The organisers said that drowning of a Tibetan youth was negligence on the part of the visitor and advised all the Tibetans to take sufficient precautions.
