మూడువైపులా కృష్ణవేణి... కనుచూపుమేరలో ఆవలి తీరం కనిపించనంత వెడల్పు... నాలుగోవైపున బంగాళాఖాతం...వీటి మధ్య దూరంగా విసిరేసినట్లుండే దివిసీమకు చుట్టూ కావలసినంత నీరు. వరదలొచ్చిన ప్రతిసారీ ఆగనంత కన్నీరు కూడా. ఇక ఈ బాధలు చరిత్రలో కలిసిపోతున్నాయి. దివిసీమ వాసుల సుదీర్ఘ కల అయిన పులిగడ్డ-పెనుమూడి వారధి శనివారం సాకారమైంది.

దివిసీమ కన్నీటి జ్ఞాపకాలకు సాంత్వన చేకూరింది. దీనివెనుక 60 ఏళ్ల ఆవేదన, ఆక్రోశం ఉన్నాయి. వాటి వెనుక గుర్తుచేసుకోవాల్సిన ఓ మరపురాని రోజు కూడా ఉంది. అది... 25 ఆగస్టు 1936. బయటి ప్రపంచంతో సంబంధంలేని ఈ ప్రాంతానికి బ్రిటిష్‌ పాలకులు క్యాంప్‌బెల్‌ ఆక్విడక్ట్‌ను, దానిపైనే రోడ్డును నిర్మించారు. 1929లో గాంధీ ఇక్కడికి వచ్చినప్పుడు పడవలో నదిని దాటిన ప్రదేశానికి కాస్త ఎగువనే ఇది నిర్మితమైంది. సారవంతమైన భూములు కలిగిన దివిసీమకు ఆక్విడెక్ట్‌ కీలకంగా మారింది. ఇక్కడి ప్రజలు మిగతా కృష్ణా మండలంతో మమేకం కావటానికీ తోడ్పడింది. అలాగే శాశ్వత నీటిపారుదల వ్యవస్థ, రవాణా సదుపాయం ఏర్పడ్డాయి. అయితే దివిసీమ కష్టాలు అంతటితో తీరలేదు. కృష్ణమ్మ ఉగ్రరూపం దాల్చిన ప్రతిసారీ ప్రపంచంతో సంబంధాలు తెగిపోయి జనం బిక్కుబిక్కుమంటూ గడపాల్సి వచ్చేది. భారీ వరదకు ఆక్విడక్టు మునిగిపోయి 2 లక్షలమంది నిద్రలేని రాత్రుల్ని గడిపేవారు. మరోవైపు దాదాపు ప్రథమ సార్వత్రిక ఎన్నికల నుంచి నేటివరకూ దివిసీమకు వంతెన నిర్మాణం ఎన్నికల హామీగానే ఉంటూ వచ్చింది. ఎట్టకేలకు మూడేళ్ల క్రితం పులిగడ్డ-పెనుమూడి వారధికి శంకుస్థాపన జరిగింది. రూ.70 కోట్లతో 214ఏ జాతీయ రహదారిలో భాగంగా దీన్ని నిర్మించారు. ముఖ్యమంత్రి వైఎస్‌ శనివారం ప్రారంభించారు. దీంతో ఏన్నో ఏళ్లనాటి కల సాకారమైందన్న ఆశ్చర్యానందాలు దివిసీమను చుట్టుముట్టాయి. ఈ వంతెనతో మారుమూలనున్న దివిసీమ జాతీయ రహదారితో అనుసంధానమైంది. సముద్ర, వ్యవసాయ ఉత్పత్తులకు పూర్తిస్థాయి రవాణా సదుపాయం కలిగింది.

Dream come true for DeeviSeema

VIJAYAWADA: For freedom fighter Mandali Rajagopala Rao, this is a dream come true. The Puligadda-Penumudi Bridge that he had fought for since the 1950?s will be finally inaugurated on Saturday.

The bridge will reduce the distances between deltaic regions of Krishna and Guntur districts. The distance between Avanigadda and Repalle would be reduced by 156 km, while the distance between Avanigadda and Tenali would come down by 114 km.

Similarly, Narsapur of West Godavari and Repalli would come closer by 112 km and the Machilipatnam and Repalli would be closer by 101 km.

Once the Losari-Pallepalem bridge near Lakshmipuram of Krishna district gets completed, this road would be converted into National Highway No 214 A and would reduce the distance between Ichhapuram in Srikakulam to Tada in Nellore by over 200 km.

Presently, the national highway that links Kolkata and Chennai passes through Kathipudi, Rajahmundry, Eluru, Vijayawada, Guntur and Ongole. Due to this, people of over 240 coastal villages have been forced to travel long distances even to reach the neighbouring villages.

The new road would not only provide them easy access to the national highway, but also greatly improve inter-village connectivity.

Several agitations were launched in the past demanding the construction of the bridge and the shifting of the national highway route closer to the coastline.

The agitations, led by Congress leaders like Buragadda Vedavyas and Mandali Buddha Prasad, took serious shape in places like Pedana, Bantumilli, Machilipatnam, Diviseema, Bapatla and Repalle.

The Puligadda-Penumudi Bridge, built at a cost of Rs 71 crore on Build-Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis would be inaugurated by Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy on Saturday.
