Telugu cinema gets a pat from Dev
Predicts a bright future for the industry with its lot of `talented' filmmakers
- Receives the first ANR award in Hyderabad
- Nageswara Rao dubs him a `legend'
- All praise for today's films, music
HYDERABAD: Iconic Hindi film actor, Dev Anand paid a glowing tribute to Telugu cinema on Sunday, foreseeing a great future for it. "Telugu films will march forward and will make their presence felt internationally. Your filmmakers are as talented as those abroad. You've got the artists, the locations, the minds and the motion pictures," he said at a press conference. He had received the first ANR award in the city on Saturday.
With his only son Sunil Anand in tow, the star was escorted by thespian Akkineni Nageswara Rao, his sons Venkat and Nagarjuna and grandson Sumanth, around Annapurna Studios. He went around the gallery and said, "I wish I had so many achievements to show. I am getting inspired".
When Akkineni Nageswara Rao introduced Dev Anand as a legend, a reporter called out, "but so are you". Nageswara Rao replied dismissively, "That's a different thing altogether".
Smoke scene
In response to a comment that music in contemporary Hindi cinema was hardly as memorable as those in films like Guide, Tere Mere Sapne, Jewel Thief or Johnnie Mera Naam, Dev Anand said, "I believe that we must not grumble. Every era has its own charm."
Indicating that one must not write off today's films, he said that nothing can compare with the life, the technology or the tempo of contemporary cinema.
Asked if he were in favour of censoring smoking scenes in films, he said with a smirk, "You might as well ban drinking scenes then. Can you ban the devil in the human mind? Conflict has always been at the heart of drama."
About co-stars
Dev Anand spoke at length about his association with his co-stars and contemporaries. Madhubala for Dev Anand was a pretty girl, who was nevertheless "whimsical." "She used to giggle a lot though. So we had to rehearse many times before we could finish shooting scenes with her," he said. She was from an age where youth was beauty. Actresses then did not have the benefits wigs and contact lenses, he said. Speaking of `Guide,' he said it was an experiment. People did not take to `Guide' right away as they thought, "They made poor Dev Anand a saint, given him a beard and then killed him off"
Cap-crazy
When asked about his fancy for caps, he replied mischievously, "Every man has his fads. Wait for the book I am writing now. A famous American has agreed to publish the book. I will disclose his name in the coming weeks," he said. Dev Anand's next venture after `Mr. Prime Minister' will be `Beauty Queen.' He is also writing a few scripts for the Writers' Guild in America.
