NTR theatre award for Duggirala Someswara Rao
The puraskaram, carrying a cash award of Rs.50,000, a gold medal and a citation, was presented to him by Union Minister of State for Coal and Mines Dasari Narayana Rao, while State Minister for Culture M. Satyanarayana Rao felicitated him.
Long career
Duggirala, hailing from Nandamuru near Nidadavole in West Godavari district donned the greasepaint for the first time in his 15th year.
Besides giving a number of performances locally, he performed in several plays in Visakhapatnam, Kurnool and Hyderabad.
He will be remembered for his portrayal of key characters in plays like జన్మహక్కు (Janmahakku), ఇంస్పెక్టర్-జెనెరల్ (Inspector-General), పంజరం (Panjaram), కన్యశుల్కం (Kanyasulkam), మరొ మోహెంజొదారొ (Maro Mohenjodaro) and ప్రతాప రుద్రం (Pratapa Rudriyam).
His directorial venture Srinathudu was not only declared the second best play in Nandi Natakotsavam 2002, but brought him laurels and the best director award too.
The retired telephones engineer, who has 60 years of theatre experience, has dedicated the award to modern Telugu theatre and announced that the entire prize money would be spent on the development of theatre art bringing thunderous applause from the audience.
