US Academics visit SVU Telugu Department

Department's work in folk studies lauded

TIRUPATI: Two US academics engaged in research on folk culture, arts, literature, etc interacted with their counterparts in the SVU's Department of Telugu Studies on Monday. Joice Flueckinger from Emory University and K.Vimala from the University of Chicago were here on the SVU campus at the invitation of Vice-Chancellor S.Jayarama Reddy.

In the course of her interface with the HoD and other faculty members of the SVU's Department of Telugu Studies, Dr. Flueckinger said that as part of her research project on folk culture, she was currently engaged in a critical study of the famous `Tirupati Gangajathara' ( తిరుపతి గంగాజాతర )-- an annual folk festival observed with a lot of fanfare in the temple city. She acknowledged that she could secure a lot of useful information and data on the festival and other related subjects and thanked the university for its collaborative efforts.

Her fellow researcher from the University of Chicago, Ms. Vimala, lauded the pioneering work being done by the university's Telugu Department in the realm of folk studies and said that the present tie-up between the SVU and the two universities would lead to many more such collaborative initiatives in future between them.

Among the participants from the SVU in the interactive session were the HoD, V.Chandrasekhar Reddy, faculty dean P.Narasimha Reddy and another faculty member Petasri whom the Vice Chancellor designated to assist the two US researchers.
