Mumbai, Aug 22, 2005

Microsoft Corporation India announced the availability of Microsoft Office Telugu 2003. The product will be officially deployed in Medak, Andhra Pradesh.

The launch was part of the inauguration of the "Rajiv Internet Village Application" by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to commemorate the birth anniversary of India's former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Rajiv Internet Village is the first adopter of Microsoft Office Telugu.

Microsoft Office Telugu is being launched under the aegis of Microsoft's Project Bhasha, aimed at taking IT to the Indian grassroots. The new product includes switchable Telugu language interface and comprehensive and complete feature support for Telugu. Microsoft Office will allow Telugu language users to leverage the global, standards-based Office applications suite in their own language.

Microsoft has worked with local partners and linguists in the development of this product, which is available in two editions - Office Telugu Professional and Office Telugu Standard.

Speaking about the new offering, Ravi Venkatesan, chairman, Microsoft India, said, "Enhancing PC usage, in order to extend the benefits of computing to the Indian grassroots, is imperative for a country like India. PC penetration can gain significant momentum with software localization and the launch of Office in Telugu. It is yet another reaffirmation of Microsoft's endeavor to make IT relevant to the Indian populace and bridge the digital divide. I am happy that we are reaching out now to several million Indians who are more comfortable exploring the benefits of IT in their own language."

The suite will allow users to not only create documents and communicate with others in the language of their choice, but will also facilitate easy navigation and use by providing menus and toolbars in Telugu. The availability of this software will provide Telugu language users with the same set of functionalities and features including spell-check, graphs, sorting, mail-merge, Smart Tags, Telugu date and time, email and presentations creation that are available globally.

Microsoft also announced the availability of online resources, training material and partner support to ensure that customers can smoothly adopt and integrate the offering into their infrastructure.

Rajiv Internet Village is a smart-client application based on Office Telugu, which provides integrated on-line services. The new software collaborates within this application through web-services. Some of the services that the citizens can access through this are on-line enrollment of weather insurance, electricity bill payment, and land records updation.
